Here are a few graphics from the work on Monday and Tuesday. It was wild hearing about how many new texts excellent first grade classes have available each day and how that is important for the Automatic Word Recognition concept. It makes so much sense to me to teach ways to mediate text, because then you can grow exponentially on your own as you practice reading.
One book you might check out for the 1,500-book info and other insights into exemplary first grade instruction is: "Learning to Read: Lessons from Exemplary First-Grade Classrooms" by Michael Pressley, Richard Allington, Ruth Wharton-MacDonald, Cathy Block, and Lesley Mandel Morrow.
Another great source of this kind of info, and other instructional info related to kids who find learning to read difficult is: "What Really Matters for Struggling Readers" by Richard Allington.
